Description

This authoritative new resource provides a comprehensive introduction to plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs), including critical discussions on energy storage and converter technology. The architecture and models for sustainable charging infrastructures and capacity planning of small scale fast charging stations are presented. This book considers PEVs as mobile storage units and explains how PEVS can provide services to the grid. Enabling technologies are explored, including energy storage, converter, and charger technologies for home and park charging. The adoption of EV is discussed and examples are given from the individual battery level to the city level.

This book provides guidance on how to build and design sustainable transportation systems. Optimal arrival rates, optimal service rates, facility location problems, load balancing, and demand forecasts are covered in this book. Time-saving MATLAB code and background tables are included in this resource to help engineers with their projects in the field.

Review by: Mohammad Shahidehpour, Illinois Institute of Technology - July 1, 2017

Drs. Bayram and Tajer have assembled a clear and systematic guide to integration of plug-in vehicles into the modernized electricity grids, and addressing the pertinent technological, economic, and social challenges. The book provides a comprehensive analysis of the numerous complex interactions at the interface of the two already complex networks, i.e., electricity and transportation systems. It starts with reviewing the current market status, the existing enabling technologies such as batteries, chargers, and current charging station infrastructure. It then provides a detailed analysis on the interactions between power grids and PEV demand, with special attention to optimizing and control of charging station infrastructure. Furthermore, the usage of PEV batteries to support the grid, residential houses, and buildings is discussed thoroughly. The book concludes with reviewing some of the relevant social, economical, and political impediments to the mainstream acceptance of the PEVs. The book maintains a global perspective in all the discussions, and it will guide designing the next-generation PEV infrastructure and operations.
