This book provides the first focused, systematic discussion of issues and technology in developing networked multimedia systems. It includes a unique explanation of color specification and its role in achieving high picture quality, high compression ratio and high information retrieval performance, plus valuable coverage of principles and techniques of multimedia information indexing and retrieval critical for future systems. You learn about the special demands multimedia systems place on the systems architecture, storage, file system, operating system, and communication subsystems - and better understand the complex design challenges these subsystems present. In addition, you gain insight into current techniques and research efforts aimed at developing new computer architecture and operating systems to support multimedia. Looking ahead, you catch a futuristic glimpse at the new Internet which is predicted to integrate all multimedia technologies and future advancements on the soon-to-be-realized information superhighway.
What Are Multimedia Computing and Communications? Characteristics and Requirements of Multimedia Data. Digital Audio, Image, and Video Compression Principles, Techniques, and Standards. End-to-End Quality-of-Service Guarantee for Digital Audio and Video Communications. Network Support for Multimedia Communications. Multimedia Transport Protocols. End-System Architecture. Multimedia Servers. Networked Multimedia Synchronization - Requirements and Mechanisms. Multimedia Information Indexing and Retrieval. Towards Information Superhighways.
