Here's a convenient full-color print presentation of leading expert Gert Bostelmann's course on UMTS signaling and protocol analysis. An excellent alternative to classroom instruction, this practical volume offers you detailed coverage of the tasks, message structures and parameters of all relevant protocols within the UTRAN, including RRC, RLC, MAC, PDCP, NBAP, and ALCAP. You learn all the important UMTS procedures such as registration, detachment, and call establishment. This invaluable resource features real-world examples from a variety of sources to give you a complete and realistic view of UMTS signaling issues. You discover how to follow call flow in a recording file; how to link various messages of a single call flow to each other; where in a recording file can I lookup the allocated bearer capabilities or thee AMR-coder type; why some UMTS protocols like RRC use the Packed Encoding Rules (PER) and how this impacts the protocol. Moreover, this hands-on reference explains why there are different types of RNTIs and when each one is used, as well as which parameters, message types and formatting are used by the various protocols within the UTRAN. The volume describes how a Radio Bearer Setup works, which messages are involved, and how the bearer is specified. You also learn how the RRC-connection is setup and which timers are involved. What's more, you gain an in-depth understanding of message flow in various UMTS scenarios. This handy resource includes a valuable glossary with definitions of key terms you'll want to be familiar with.
